Routing Number vs Account Number: Which Is Which (and Which Is Safe to Share)

Two numbers, constantly confused, with very different sensitivity. Getting them backwards is the #1 direct-deposit failure.

Reading the MICR line

Bottom-left of a check: the routing number is exactly 9 digits between ⑆ symbols and identifies the bank. Your account number follows it β€” typically 8–12 digits and unique to you. The last group is just the check number.

In your banking app

Look for 'account details', 'direct deposit info', or 'account & routing numbers'. Screenshots from these screens are accepted by many payroll providers in place of a voided check.

Sharing risk, honestly

Routing numbers are public. Account numbers deserve care: with both, someone can attempt ACH debits β€” which are reversible, but annoying. Share them with employers and trusted billers; never by open email if you can avoid it.
